2.5miles from the town centre of Aberfoyle nestled in the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Forest this 500 year old tower house with connections to Rob Roy has been fully renovated, offering 3 unique luxury self-catering properties on the estate; Duchray Castle, Duchray Lodge and The West Wing.
The oldest part of Duchray Castle dates from the 16th century, when it is believed to have been built as a hunting lodge for the Kings of Scotland. Set in 80 acres of parkland the location is secluded, rural and scenic but is within 30 miles of Stirling and Glasgow making it highly accessible.
The historic property has been renovated to a high standard and is stylishly decorated, elegantly highlighting and complimenting the charming period features of the building, and offering stunning views across the estate. Accommodation within the castle is spacious and luxurious comprising of 4 large bedrooms that sleep up to 8 people, all with deluxe ensuite bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and huge dining and living areas with a feature fireplace.
Duchray Lodge, the former gatehouse to the castle, is a charming luxury 2 bedroom free standing cottage set within the secluded grounds of the castle estate. The flexible sleeping layout offers the option of 2 doubles and one single or 1 double and 3 singles, making it suitable for families or groups of friends. There is a newly fitted kitchen and central bathroom, and a cosy living and dining space with log burner.
The West Wing at Duchray castle is a Victorian annex located to the West side of the main castle building. The beautifully decorated annex has been transformed into a luxury bright and airy two bedroom space with a central bathroom and a large open plan cook’s kitchen and living room with log burner; the perfect space to gather and enjoy time together. The West Wing sleeps 4 in a double and a twin bedroom, both rooms with uninterrupted views over the estate.
The immaculately kept grounds of the estate are for guests to wander and explore the hidden paths, streams and fields to discover the woodlands and wonderful wildlife. Beyond the estate you will find access to running, cycling and walking routes through the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, and a short walk or drive takes you into the village of Aberfoyle for dining, shopping, family activities, bike hire and information centre.
Duchray Castle -- Perfect & More Duchray Castle, inside and out, is beautiful! The owners (Frances & Oliver) have put a tremendous amount of care and attention to detail into every fixture and design element. We stayed in the Rob Roy bridal suite and were constantly trekking our wedding guests up the stairs to show off the bathroom which was the size of a studio apartment and boasts a ceiling mounted rain showerhead and huge bathtub. Everything at Duchray is luxurious but still manages to be incredibly comfortable and homelike. (If one's home were a castle!) Frances & Oliver live in the annex across from the main building and are very good at providing just the right amount of customer service. They don't wait on you hand & foot (thank goodness) but are always around at exactly the right moment to answer a question or help out. And the breakfast is excellent.
As we live in the US, we reserved Duchray for our wedding sight-unseen. The first time we saw it was when we arrived 2 days before our wedding and it truly exceeded our expectations. And when you have a castle venue, expectations can run high! One of the reasons we chose Duchray was that it gave us the flexibility to have our ceremony inside if the weather didn't allow for an outside event. Plus we didn't have to bother with decorations, because everything is already set-up beautifully. Frances has a keen eye for incoming weather, so under her guidance we were able to do the ceremony during the best weather of the day.
Our wedding was on the small side -- 16 in all. Between the castle’s four bedrooms and the newly opened cottage, we were able to put up almost all of our non-local guests at a very reasonable price. Which was great, because destination weddings create a lot of expense for guests and it was a bonus that we could provide lodging without breaking our budget.
As a wedding coordinator, Frances is amazing. Not only did she graciously & promptly respond to my many emails but she also provided top-notch recommendations for local vendors to work with. (Bespoke Catering based in Stirling truly exceeded any and all expectations we had.) After consultation with Frances, we decided to have some flowers for the dinner table, and the florist she recommended put together a lovely setup based on some pretty vague info I provided.
One of the things I wanted for our wedding was to not worry about the microdetails. And with Frances managing the event and the beautiful setup that Duchray offers, that is exactly what happened. We arrived in Scotland, got over our jet lag, had a gorgeous wedding, and spent the day enjoying time with our guests. Everything else, Frances and her recommended vendors took care of.
FANTASTIC, LUXURY We were a group of 8, staying 3 nights on a self catering basis at Duchray Castle and could not have asked for better accommodation, it was absolutely beautiful. All 4 bedrooms are lovely, the castle was so cozy and welcoming arriving on a cold November day the open fires were all set up for us , just to be lit. The kitchen is so well equipped. The beds very comfy, all rooms en suite with lovely toiletries.
We were there to celebrate a 60th birthday, the new owners left a beautiful birthday gift. Communication before our arrival was excellent. We cant recommend this place highly enough.
We will be back!! Thankyou for a brilliant 3 nights More
Amazing Wedding Venue If you are planning on getting married, before you do anything else, lift the phone and see if your date is available and book Duchray Castle now, because someone else will snap it up before you get to the end of this review.
On Behalf of My Husband and Myself I would like to thank Frances and Oliver for providing the perfect wedding venue for our intimate family wedding. The castle itself is spectacular, the vaulted room candlelit for our ceremony could not have been more romantic.
Our guests were attended to brilliantly and when it started to rain during the photoshoot Oliver appeared like magic with umbrellas for the wedding party. The grounds are luscious and provide the perfect backdrop for spectacular photos, however if like us there does happen to be a downpour the photo opportunities inside are just as amazing.
Our guests were overwhelmed at the perfect romantic setting, the attentiveness of the hosts and the overall ambience of the wedding. Many remarked that it was the best wedding they had ever been to, and I can only agree. It was absolutely perfect, and I cannot recommend Duchray Castle enough to any prospective bride and groom.
I will add photos when we get them back from the photographer.
